Food for the Soul

PoetryI recently had lunch with a woman in our church who shares my love for poetry. She asked me if I would like to share some of my poetry with her and I consented even though I hadn’t written any substantial poems in about 13 years. In our time of sharing, something she said struck me “your poems can sometimes touch people in ways other language cannot. The pain you’ve experienced can be just as therapeutic for others as your joys”.  In light of that, I wrote this poem at a time of deep distress in my life.  I hope it blesses you.  It’s called “Turn”.

Turn

To whom shall we turn

when the heartaches of life

inevitably

take their toll

To whom shall we turn

when the anger inside

threatens

to tarnish the soul.

To whom shall we turn

when there’s cancer

To whom shall we turn

when there’s fear

To whom shall we turn

when the road curves ahead

and we’ve lost the power to steer.

To whom shall we turn

in disaster

To whom shall we turn

in divorce

To whom shall we turn

when the ship we are sailing

drastically alters its course.

To whom shall we turn

when we’re hurting

To whom shall we turn

when unfair

To whom shall we turn

when we’ve done all we can

yet the spirit of death’s in the air.

To whom shall we turn

but The Father

who gives us the power to see

That HE is the bread of life

Oh God

To whom shall we turn but thee.
