Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas ChildSamaritan’s Purse is one of my favorite charities. They are one of the first responders when catastrophe hits, offering emergency rescue, recovery and hope to hurting people around the world. Even now they have efforts under way in the Philippines and you can donate here to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Each year they conduct “Operation Christmas Child” to communicate hope, joy and God’s love to children around the world at Christmastime by sending shoe boxes full of gifts to boys and girls. Luke and I participated through his school. We had the most interesting comment from a Target worker when we were going through the checkout line with our gifts. He asked what all the toys were for and we said “for sending to children around the world at Christmas”. He said “what if the kids don’t celebrate Christmas?” to which I responded “they don’t need to celebrate Christmas to receive a free gift. Have you ever known a child to turn down a box of toys?” I felt his question was so perfect because it encapsulated the Spirit of Christ.  A spirit that gives without any pre-requisites.  In spite of our sin, in spite of rejection even, He gives.  God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him might not perish but have everlasting life. That free gift is available to all regardless of whether they celebrate Christmas or not. We can all choose to receive this free gift of life.
